    Revolutionising breakdown safety

    Motorists are advised to complete a number of actions if they break down at the side of a road. These include turning on hazard warning lights, vacating the vehicle and standing either behind motorway barriers, on embankments or at least a safe distance away from the broken down vehicle.

    While these are all sensible precautions, they only benefit the stationary vehicle, its driver and passengers. These actions do not prevent a potential high speed collision between another passing vehicle and the broken down vehicle – the results of which could have life changing or life ending consequences.

    An interview with Simon Rood, CEO of Roadflash

      As a brand, Roadflash is a relatively new arrival to the automotive industry. How have motorists responded to your products?

      The feedback received from the motoring community has been remarkable. Roadflash, by its nature, is a simple, fast and effective solution to significantly increase the safety of not only the person involved in a collision or accident, but it also improves safety for other road users – whether that be other vehicles, cyclists and horse riders.

      In your view, how has road safety evolved in recent years? What more can organisations such as the Highways Agency do to make further improvements?

      Technology, both in vehicles and roadsides, has significantly advanced road safety awareness. However, when you review the official statistics published by the Department for Transport the 2022 figures show only a small decline in fatalities and those seriously injured.

      Road safety often centres around the hazardous vehicle in question, but your products factor in the safety of passing motorists too – what prompted this focus?

      We see road accidents as a ripple effect – like dropping a pebble in a pool. At the centre is the accident itself, causing significant distress to the victim or victims. But surrounding that are a great many other people impacted by the incident. The witnesses, the road users caught up in congestion, and the attending emergency services – road accidents affect many more people than just those directly involved. Our innovations focus on helping as many people in that ‘pool’ as possible.

      What impact has The Hazard Awareness Wrap made since it was launched?

      Its simplicity is what continues to drive its adoption, yet we don’t rest on our laurels. We are constantly reviewing its uptake and gaining great insights into the demographic groups where we see the greatest sales traction. We are in the second phase of this product evolution and are working with specific road user groups, such as the young driver community, to ensure it forms of any new driver safety pack.
